How would you describe a gamer?

Wow, great topic I'm not sure that the term "average gamer" is realistic. I've been a gamer for about 24 years and from what I have seen you are either a Hardcore gamer or not a gamer at all. It is without a doubt the biggest time killer of our generation and will be for a long time to come. It has replaced endless nights of watching TV in the 60's, 70's and 80's with something far more entertaining. Every year just gets better and better. It has now gone past the point of simple entertainment to full blown addiction. The days have gone from pong to Oblivion and we just can't get enough. A gamer from 15 years ago was simply someone who thought it was fun to play video games, endless hours of Pong and space Invaders untill they burnt a hole in their T.V's. Simply trying to get a new high score. Everything was made buy Atari and Activision and it didn't matter to anyone. Then Nintendo had to come along and change all of that. Today's gamer is that of a far more complex gamer. The gaming world has become so large that every gamer can have their own preferrence on console, genre, and online ego. Thousands of people spending millions of dollars on magazines and demos just to get a glimps of what is to come. They have twitter following their favorite websites for the latest rumors, and talk about it constantly on face book. This is all worth it because it isn't just finding out what the next cool game is, it's how I'm going to spend the next three months of my life when my favorite game comes out. Relationships are lost, children are neglected, friends are forgotten, but that is ok I need more time for gaming anyways. |

How would you describe an average video gamer today, and how would you have done five, ten, and fifteen years ago? Has there been much change in your opinion, and if so, how has this come about?
(This question is part of my research for a university project, and any appropriate responses may be quoted as a result, in which case only your screen name (and gender if you specify) will be recorded only for the purpose of the aforementioned research.)
